Metacask to auction The Angel’s Share NFT:
A physical, ultra-rare cask of 1991 Macallan whisky – valued at over $2 million – and a Trevor Jones original work
- Sale is expected to surpass the current world record for an individual whisky cask auction
- ‘The Angel’s Share’ will be the third high-profile drop from Jones this Fall, starting with an October 1 auction at Christie’s
15 SEPT – ZUG, SWITZERLAND – Metacask, a premier marketplace for the sale of whisky cask NFTs, announced that a partnership with renowned artist Trevor Jones to develop its first NFT for auction, set for October 18-22: ‘The Angel’s Share’.
‘The Angel’s Share’ brings together two ultra-rare, highly-valuable works: a cask of 1991 Macallan whisky, with an estimated value of over $2 million, and an accompanying 1/1 digital painting from Jones, inspired by the cask, distillery and Scotland’s robust whisky heritage. The winning bidder will own the physical cask and the digital work, with the NFT serving as a digital title of deed for the cask, currently stored at the Macallan distillery in Scotland.
The $2+ million valuation far exceeds the current $573,000 (HK$4,464,000) record for a whisky cask sold at auction, set last month by another 1991 Macallan at Bonhams in Hong Kong.
Jones is widely regarded as one of the foremost NFT artists in the world. His total sales, by value, rank him among the top-five all time for any NFT artist. ‘The Angel’s Share’ will be the second high-profile drop from Jones in less than a month, following the release of a highly-anticipated collaboration with rapper and actor Ice Cube.
Jones said: “As an artist, the opportunity to create an original piece for such a unique concept, linked to a name as prestigious as Macallan, was very exciting. NFTs are the future of digital ownership, but Metacask is taking this technological innovation to the next stage with regards to physical assets and investment. I’m thrilled to be a part of this pioneering venture.”
Metacask co-founder Nim Siriwardana said: “The market for rare, high-quality assets is rapidly expanding, both for digital art and whisky. In bringing together Trevor and Macallan, two titans of their respective craft, we’ve curated a unique NFT for this first auction that we believe will appeal to two distinct, but increasingly overlapping sets of investors. We’re making it easier than ever for digital asset investors to tap into their growing taste for fine whisky, while giving traditional buyers and brokers a modern mechanism for investment that solves longstanding challenges around quality and provenance.”
Following the sale of ‘The Angel’s Share’, Metacask will begin its first series of regular whisky cask NFT auctions on its marketplace in early November. As with NFTs, a variety of casks with different price points will be offered, making cask ownership available to a broad audience. Pre-registration for these auctions will open October 25.
Metacask has partnered with VCL Vintners, a London-based merchant highly regarded for its sales of rare and exceptional whisky casks and its tally of £70 million in whisky assets under management. VCL will provide the inventory for primary sales on Metacask, which will include additional highly rare and prized casks.
Notes on the Macallan cask
What makes the ‘The Angel’s Share’ cask exceptional is:
- Size and yield: The cask holds the equivalent of 608 bottles of whisky. This volume is nearly triple that of the 1991 Macallan cask that sold for a world-record amount in August.
- Rarity: Few Macallan casks have made it to the market in recent years, as the overall number in circulation is very small. Macallan does not release casks to private collectors, which has increased demand.
- Provenance: The cask has been stored at the distillery since being filled in 1991. This is a rarity for whisky casks and a trait that the whisky industry recognizes as increasing the value of the product.

Notes on ‘The Angel’s Share’
An original and expressive work from Scotland-based artist Trevor Jones, “The Angel’s Share” celebrates Scotland and the enduring talents of whisky production through an abstract and painterly depiction of the Macallan’s 1991 Cask #12612. This artwork combines the variety of elements that represent the rare cask including the ceiling of the Macallan’s distillery, the heads and wings of two angels, the initial volume of the whisky, the cask silhouette and the shape of the copper pot stills.
Reflecting tangible qualities with a sense of environment, the colour palette explores the ambers, bronzes and golds of the whisky, the coppers and umbers of the distillery, the greens and purples of the thistle, Scotland’s national flower, and the moody greys of the famed and inclement Scottish weather.
This large canvas draws note to the value of the cask as an investment, and to the world of collectors and connoisseurs. “The Angel’s Share” digital image and the 1991 cask work together in a unique partnership of status and exclusivity. In an industry first, the two will be made available through innovative blockchain technology and an NFT digital work of art.
